Children have a right to fun and relaxation.

The Josef Schörghuber-Stiftung für Münchner Kinder was founded in 1995 at the initiative of the Munich businessman Josef Schörghuber, who provided it with an initial endowment of three million marks.

The foundation is administered by Munich's social welfare department. The funds that the foundation provides each year come primarily from donations, which flow directly into the activities organized during the school holidays for children and adolescents from socially disadvantaged families without any deductions made for administrative costs. The only condition when applying for financial support is that the children and adolescent's registered address is in Munich.

The foundation enables children and adolescents from socially disadvantaged families in Munich to go on vacation or participate in programs and activities organized during the school holidays. These can be camps lasting several days organized by youth welfare and outreach services, class trips and club outings, a carefree vacation for particularly stressed families or covering the cost of a family vacation. A thorough means-tested assessment is performed if the measures to be provided are more comprehensive. The foundation also supports the programs organized during the school holidays by the city's youth welfare office.

"No child in Munich should have to forgo holidays spent together with their peers for financial reasons."

Alexandra Schörghuber, patron of the Josef Schörghuber-Stiftung für Münchner Kinder

When money is tight, fun and relaxation often fall by the wayside. While their friends are off on trips, children from disadvantaged families often have to stay home. They are also often unable to take part in class trips or stays at school camps. In most cases, there is simply no money to spare for these types of activities. And during the school holiday, parents are often unable to take time off work and the children are sometimes left to their own devices. As a result, children often feel left out. Their friends are away, their parents are at work, and the days are long. And once the school holidays are over, they have to stand there silently while their classmates talk about wonderful vacations they have taken with their families or friends.

The Josef Schörghuber-Stiftung für Münchner Kinder makes it possible for children and adolescents to participate in programs and activities organized during the school holidays that they would otherwise be unable to attend. This means that they are actually able to experience mountains, farms and the sea rather than just looking at them in picture books, on television or on the Internet.

The founder

Josef Schörghuber was born in 1920 in Mitteraham near Mühldorf am Inn, an area that is now a popular destination for family vacations and outings. Life as a child was often not easy for Josef Schörghuber. But one thing that he never forgot were the holidays he spent in Upper Bavaria, which were organized back then by the local parish. He wished that every child could have such memories. Especially those who unable to enjoy such an experience for financial reasons.

Josef Schörghuber became a successful businessman, founded the Schörghuber Group and established the foundation, which is named after him, shortly before his 75th birthday. He provided an initial endowment of three million marks to the city of Munich. Josef Schörghuber died two months before the Munich City Council officially established the Josef Schörghuber-Stiftung für Münchner Kinder on 26 July 1995.

The Schörghuber family, and with it the Schörghuber Group, remained firmly committed to the foundation. Alexandra Schörghuber, deputy chairwoman of the group’s executive board, is the patron of the foundation and in this role provides support both as a donor and as a fundraiser.

Holiday sponsorship

Holiday sponsors regularly donate a fixed amount to the foundation and thus make budget planning easier. The reason for this is that applications for funding are submitted before the total amount of donations is known. This amount fluctuates from year to year. The average funding required, however, remains relatively stable at 400,000 euros per year. Donors who support the foundation with regular donations are vital if the foundation is to be able to provide help over the long term.

Donations as gifts

Donations instead of gifts: If on a particular occasion donations are to be made rather that gifts given, the foundation’s administration agrees on a keyword with the initiators so that the donations received can be allocated correctly. Afterwards, the initiators receive information about the total amount donated upon request.

Applying for help

When allocating funds, focus is placed on providing individual support to children and families in need. They must have been registered as living in Munich for at least one year in order to apply for funding.

The foundation also offers grants to welfare and youth welfare organizations for the purpose of implementing programs organized during the school holidays and other recreational activities, as well as recreational activities for families in need.

The grants from the foundation are not intended to replace public support such as youth welfare but rather supplement it.

  • Experience something wonderful during the school holidays

Munich offers a comprehensive range of programs and activities organized during the school holidays that receive financial support from the Josef Schörghuber-Stiftung für Münchner Kinder. This lowers the cost and makes it more likely that families will be able to afford to participate. Additional support is available in individual cases.

  • Having a great time together

Class trips and outings undertaken together are little ways to escape from everyday life. They engender a sense of solidarity and provide a great opportunity to experience something outside of school with friends. The foundation helps pupils from families in need participate.

  • On vacation at last

Family vacations are wonderful – a chance to get away from it all, relax together, experience new things and spend quality time together. But taking a trip costs money and it is often impossible for families in difficult financial circumstances to afford. This is where the foundation helps.
